Meritorious Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Afridi, is a globally renowned Psychiatrist/Physician and presently holds highest academic posts at three prestigious institutions. Dean (Faculty of Medicine), Professor & Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU). Dean, Faculty of Psychiatry, College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), where he is supervisor, examiner & convener. Dean, Medical Surgical & allied disciplines at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) since 2017, where he is also Professor & HOD, Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences since 2009. He has trained over 250 postgraduates, and several hundreds of Undergraduates, General Physicians, Nursing, Occupational Therapists etc.

As a Teacher and Clinical Supervisor, Dr. Afridi is greatly admired by his pupil and peers, who honoured him with Best University Teacher Award 2019 at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU). He tirelessly works for the promotion of Mental Health, both locally and globally. Earlier in 2020, he invited the current President of World Psychiatric Association, Dr. Afzal Javed, as the key-note speaker to elaborate on the “Future of Psychiatry” to destigmatize and popularize field of Mental Health to overcome the huge gap of mental healthcare in Pakistan.

Prof. Afridi’s innovative ideas and contributions to Mental Health Advancement and Research in Pakistan are widely acknowledged. He initiated 9 special clinics for Psychiatry at JPMC, thus he was made the Country Collaborator for global COHFIT study (largest COVID-19 & Mental Health research with 200 investigators in 152 countries & 121000 participants), and National Director for Memory First Aid International UK. He also advocated for Psycho-Social Support for COVID-19 Frontline Workers and Public to Federal Ministry of Health as president of Psychiatric Society etc. Due to his established credibility and diligence, 2.7 million USD funds were generated for construction of 105 bedded state-of-the-art Psychiatric and Behavioural Sciences Department at JPMC through public-private partnership.

He is a great advocate of research and practice of evidence-based medicine. He is not only the author of numerous publications (102 research papers, 02 books & 05 chapters) and he is also a part of editorial boards and review committees of various peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Pakistan Medical Association (JPMA) besides being the Editor-in-chief of JPPS (Journal of Pakistan Psychiatric Society).

Prof. Afridi’s academic input as the Dean of Faculty of Psychiatry at College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and Dean, Faculty of Medical, Surgical & allied disciplines at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre has helped strengthen the educational and training programs for current and future generations of healthcare providers particularly in the field of psychiatry. He has helped conceive the curriculum of Psychiatry residency programs in the region, introduced Child & Adolescent Psychiatry as a second Fellowship in Pakistan, and ensured uninterrupted delivery of teaching and training throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, via electronic and digital media.

In view of his great contribution he is give the post of Meritorious Professor at JSMU & Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine, the 121 years old prestigious institute at Houston, Texas, USA since December 2020.

One of the main goals of PAPANA is to assist and prepare Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship applicants from Pakistan or of Pakistani descent from any part of the world to successfully enter Psychiatry Residency and Fellowship programs in the United States.
